Natural Remedies for High Blood Pressure

June 12, 2017 By Brandon Godwin

The beating of the heart causes pressure, which allows the blood to circulate around the body. This can become abnormal and lead to high blood pressure for a number of reasons. To avoid this abnormality, here are some natural remedies for high blood pressure.

5 Effective Natural Remedies for High Blood Pressure

There are two forces that pump blood throughout our body. The first occurs when the heart pumps blood out into our arteries and the second happens when it draws blood back into the muscle (between beats) as the heart rests. Having hypertension affects this system, making your heart work harder to pump blood. Hypertension causes your blood vessels to over-stretch, which can lead to damaged walls. Thankfully, there are simple and natural remedies for high blood pressure!

1. Reduce Your Salt Intake

Having too much sodium intake disturbs the balance of the fluids in your body. Salt attracts water, and when there is so much around the tissues, this causes your heart to pump more blood—increasing your blood pressure. To reduce the amount of salt in your body, flush it out by drinking more water.

2. Drink Hibiscus Tea

Hibiscus, used worldwide to handle high blood pressure, acts as a diuretic, which helps decrease pressure on the arterial walls. It’s not as potent as certain drugs, but it’s natural.

3. Drink Coconut Water

Coconut water contains magnesium and potassium, which regulates muscle function. This is beneficial for people with hypertension since the heart is composed of muscles. Studies about coconut’s effects on hypertension are limited, but were anecdotally reported to help lower your blood pressure. In those limited studies, it is said to affect the force responsible for pumping blood out of the heart.

4. Eat Garlic

Garlic, rich in components that aid in many ailments like hypertension, is one of the easiest remedies you can try since you can most likely find it in your kitchen already. The compound allicin found in garlic helps to lower your blood pressure. However, if garlic is eaten raw, this compound deactivates once it reaches the stomach, because of its pH level. Therefore, garlic is best taken as a capsule.

5. Take Fish Oil

Fish oil, and the omega-3 fatty acids it contains, helps the heart by lowering your blood pressure, increasing your good cholesterol (HDL), and reducing the number of triglycerides. People who have undergone a heart transplant are often given fish oil to decrease the risk of having hypertension.
